How to buy box spring mattresses?

by Decor8 Admin 03 Dec 2025

Box spring mattresses are very thick and therefore particularly high mattresses that provide a lot of comfort during your night’s sleep. Thanks to their structure, they relieve the strain on your spine at night and make it easier to get up in the morning.

What are the characteristics of box spring mattresses?

  • What are the advantages of a box spring bed and a box spring mattress compared to conventional beds and “normal” mattresses ? The most striking thing is that they are significantly thicker: they measure up to 30 cm in height.
  • The mattress therefore makes it easier to get into bed. This is particularly useful for older or physically disabled people, as it allows them to go to bed comfortably and get up easily in the morning.
  • Box spring mattresses are characterized by their high level of support . They offer a high level of comfort and enable a high quality of sleep. At the same time, your spine benefits from the relief provided by the support.
  • Flexible: The mattress adapts ergonomically to your body. If you are a side sleeper, it allows your shoulder to sink in, but the mattress with the appropriate spring core is also suitable for stomach and back sleepers.
  • You don’t necessarily need a box spring bed for your box spring mattress; you can also equip a bed with a slatted frame with it – a good alternative to a box spring bed.
  • Some box spring mattress suspension systems have a special spiral structure inside; this is intended to guarantee support and make the mattress particularly robust and durable.

How big should a mattress be?

Box spring mattresses are available in various standard sizes and heights. To choose the right mattress height, you should consider the height of the bed frame and your height: What entry height suits your comfort level? 50 or 70 cm? In terms of length, 200 cm is standard. In terms of width: If you sleep alone, around 80 to 120 cm is sufficient. For couples , mattresses from 140 to 160 cm are suitable. For families where a child occasionally sleeps in the parents’ bed, a 180 to 200 cm wide mattress is well suited.

How firm should my mattress be?

The degree of firmness indicates how much a mattress gives way under the weight of the body. Smaller and lighter people are well advised to choose a softer degree of firmness. Heavier and taller people are better supported by a mattress with a higher degree of firmness. If you sleep on your back, you may feel more comfortable with a mattress that is one degree harder than stated , while if you sleep on your stomach, you will often sleep better on a mattress that is one degree softer.

What additional functions do modern box spring mattresses offer?

Modern box spring mattresses are sometimes characterized by a striking design or special cover materials: for example, there are mattresses with a high-quality viscose cover or with a cover that is explicitly classified as sustainable. Some models can also be used as a reversible mattress; turning loops are practical in this context, allowing you to turn more easily.

Which mattress core of a box spring mattress is suitable for me?

  • In a pocket spring mattress , the springs are individually incorporated into small pockets. This makes it particularly firm, but at the same time it can cushion pressure in specific areas – good for side sleepers.
  • pocket spring mattress has springs that are wider in the middle than at the top and bottom. This gives them even better resilience and gives you a particularly comfortable lying experience, which can be beneficial if you have back problems.
  • In models with Bonell spring cores , the springs are connected to each other by wires and thus vibrate elastically when you move. This is good if you turn or roll around a lot in your sleep.
  • Visco foam is a soft, thermo-elastic foam. When it is warmed by your body, it becomes malleable and you can sink into the mattress. Where your body does not touch the surface, it remains firm.

Which mattress is suitable for sensitivities?

Comfort or cold foam has an open-pored structure and is therefore breathable. If you sweat in bed, a breathable mattress ensures a dry, comfortable sleeping experience by transporting the moisture away from your body. A breathable mattress also prevents mold. A comfort foam core is point-elastic and provides good pressure relief thanks to the supple material. A comfort foam mattress is usually a good choice for orthopedic problems.

What are the advantages of a spring mattress?

  • The term spring core refers to the interior of certain mattresses. In spring core mattresses, this consists of many small steel springs, which are shaped differently depending on the type.
  • So that you don’t feel the feathers when you lie on them, they are wrapped in a protective layer of felt or fleece.
  • The mattress structure also includes a layer of padding material, which serves to minimize unevenness in the springs and increase sleeping comfort.
  • Spring mattresses have the advantage that they are very durable and give your body good support while you sleep.
  • While you tend to sink into a cold foam mattress or a latex mattress, your weight is comfortably cushioned with a spring mattress.
  • Compared to other types of mattresses, spring mattresses react more quickly to pressure. This means they adapt immediately to your movements. This creates a feeling as if you were floating.
  • Unlike a continuous foam or latex filling, spring mattresses have hollow spaces between the springs. This makes them particularly well ventilated compared to other mattresses.
  • The good breathability prevents mold from forming. Heat and moisture do not build up in the mattress and you do not sweat as quickly.

What types of spring mattresses are there?

Bonell spring core

Bonell spring mattresses have tapered steel springs that are thicker at the ends and slightly thinner in the middle. The individual springs are connected to a spiral at the top and bottom. This means that the mattress always gives way across the entire surface when you apply pressure. It is therefore not point-elastic, but rather surface-elastic. The mattress also swings when you turn over. This is not ideal for people with back pain. If, on the other hand, you like to sleep softly and like the springy feeling, this type of mattress is suitable for you. Overall, Bonell spring mattresses offer less comfort than pocket spring mattresses, but are cheaper.

Tip: High-quality Bonell spring core models usually offer three to seven lying zones. The different hard areas are created by different wire thicknesses and cover foams.

Pocket spring core

In a pocket spring mattress, the individual springs are sewn into small fabric pockets. This creates point elasticity: the springs can move individually and the mattress only gives way in the places where you apply pressure. This means that it adapts very well to your body and relieves the strain on your spine. Overall, you sink less deeply than with a Bonnell spring core. Since the springs work independently of one another, the transfer of movements to the other side of the mattress is also reduced. This means that you disturb your partner less when you turn over. Pocket spring mattresses are more expensive than Bonnell spring mattresses, but they offer better sleeping comfort and a good balance between support and adaptability.

Tip: Since the steel springs in a pocket spring core do not touch each other, they do not make any noise when you turn over in bed.

Barrel pocket spring core

Barrel pocket spring mattresses are a special type of pocket spring mattress. They have conical springs that are wider in the middle than at the top and bottom. This means they offer even greater point elasticity and adapt even better to your body. The spine is particularly well relieved, which is beneficial if you often suffer from back pain, for example. Barrel pocket spring mattresses are the highest quality and most comfortable spring mattresses, but also the most expensive.

Tip: The more springs the mattress contains, the better it adapts to the body – but the harder it feels when you lie on it. If you like to sleep softly, you should choose a mattress with fewer springs.

Which type of mattress is right for me?

  • If you are a side sleeper, a pocket spring core or barrel pocket spring core is suitable. Thanks to the point elasticity, your shoulders and hips sink in while your spine remains straight.
  • If you are a back or stomach sleeper and like to lie on a soft surface, a Bonnell spring mattress is also an option.
  • Do you have back problems? Then a barrel pocket spring core offers very good relief for your spine.
  • All types of spring core are suitable for allergy sufferers thanks to the good ventilation. Also make sure that the cover and upholstery are made of hypoallergenic materials.
  • The firmness of the mattress should be tailored to your body weight. H1 (very soft) is suitable for people up to around 65 kg. Manufacturers’ firmness levels usually go up to H5 (very hard, 121 to 160 kg).
  • Do you sweat a lot at night? Then you can increase the cooling effect of the spring mattress if the surface is quilted with horsehair instead of cotton.

Which slatted frame and which bed is suitable for the spring core?

  • The spring mattress is best placed on a rigid slatted frame or a roll-up frame.
  • It is not suitable for motor-adjustable slatted frames. Plate slatted frames are also not recommended because they cannot fully develop their effect in combination with spring mattresses.
  • You have flexibility when choosing a bed. However, to ensure good ventilation, there should be enough space under the mattress and slatted frame.
  • Box spring beds are also very popular. With this bed model, the mattress does not lie on a slatted frame, but on a sprung base.

7 tips: Care and more for mattresses for box spring beds

  1. How do I care for and clean box spring mattresses? They usually have a removable cover that you can wash at 30 to 60 °C.
  2. You can find further cleaning tips, including how to remove stubborn stains, in our guide to cleaning mattresses.
  3. To remove mites, dust and dander, you should also vacuum your mattress once a week with a vacuum cleaner on the lowest setting.
  4. To prevent mites from making themselves comfortable in your mattress, avoid a warm, humid climate. To do this, leave the covers pulled back for a few hours in the morning before making the bed.
  5. With a topper, a narrow mattress pad, it is important that it has the same dimensions as the mattress. You can optimize the comfort of lying down with a topper if the mattress is a little too hard or too soft for you.
  6. When it comes to bed sheets, you are completely free to choose the material you want. It is important that you pay attention not only to the length and width, but also to the total height of the mattress and topper.
  7. Are you looking for alternatives to box spring mattresses, for example for your guest room? Possible options include folding mattresses or air beds.
