How to buy airbeds?

by Decor8 Admin 04 Dec 2025

Light and flexible mattresses with lots of comfort

The birds are chirping and a ray of sunshine tickles your nose. When you open your eyes, you briefly wonder where you are – then you remember: you’re staying in your friends’ small, cozy apartment on your city trip. They set up an airbed for you as a guest bed, on which you slept wonderfully softly and comfortably. Here you can find out what practical features airbeds offer in addition to great sleeping comfort and how you can find the right model for you.

Space-saving for guests furnished with airbeds

If you don’t have a separate guest room but still like to invite friends and relatives over for the night, airbeds are a cheap and space-saving alternative to sofa beds. When folded up, the airbed fits in the wardrobe, bed box or shelf. When you need it, it is quickly ready to hand and inflated. This makes spontaneous overnight visits possible, and if you meet up with friends it can be late – after all, comfortable sleeping options are guaranteed.

But you can use your air bed not only as a guest bed, but also as a second bed . On a hot summer night, it is often pleasant to sleep outside on the balcony. With an air bed, this is easily possible. When camping or on vacation, the mobile air bed fits into your luggage without taking up much space or weighing much. Some models have a handy carrying bag for this purpose and then ensure a lot of sleeping comfort in the tent.

Tip: Mites have difficulty multiplying on airbeds. They are therefore a sensible alternative to guest mattresses for allergy sufferers.

Airbeds with space and extras: an overview of variants

Airbeds vary in size, shape and type of inflation. We have put together an overview and will show you which airbed suits your needs.

The space-saving option: the single bed

If you only have visitors now and then and you have limited space for an air bed in the living room , a single bed is recommended. The sleeping areas vary on these models and are around 70 to 100 cm wide and 190 to 200 cm long. Here, a single person has enough space to get a restful sleep.

These inflatable sleeping arrangements are also practical for shared apartments, if a guest spontaneously wants to stay overnight after the party. Single beds also require little storage space, so the emergency sleeping space can always be stored in the closet and ready to hand.

Tip: Space-saving airbeds can also be used as travel beds for children. There are special children’s airbeds for three to eight-year-olds and up to a weight of around 35 kg.

For two guests and more freedom of movement: double airbeds

Double beds offer flexible sleeping space for two people. The sleeping areas vary and are usually 135 to 180 cm wide and 190 to 200 cm long. For a single person, more space increases sleeping comfort because they can turn around undisturbed. So if you have the necessary space in your living room, you’re making the right choice by choosing a double bed.

Tip: Round airbeds will impress your guests with their extravagance in a large room.

Easily inflated: beds with integrated electric pump

Plug the plug into the socket, flip the switch on the head or foot section and the air bed with integrated electric pump inflates itself in just a few minutes. Other tools such as a hand pump, bellows or an external electronic pump are not necessary. This is convenient and shortens the preparation time. The highlight: With many beds, the integrated pump can also be used to let the air out more quickly. This means you can quickly put your air bed away again.

Looks like a real bed: airbeds with headboard

Lean back comfortably in the evening and read a little while sitting – this is possible with an air bed with a headboard. The visually appealing models are reminiscent of a real bed and invite you to relax on the air bed to end the day. Some models have a slightly raised headboard that can replace a pillow.

Tip: Airbeds for children sometimes have raised sides. This can prevent the child from rolling out of bed while sleeping.

Get up better in the morning: airbeds with raised lying surface

Older people or pregnant women in particular often find it difficult to get up from a low air mattress. The height of an air bed is usually between 20 and 30 cm. A higher bed height of at least 40 cm can make getting up easier. This also means you can sit on the air bed in the morning and effortlessly put on your socks and shoes without having to bend down too far.

Durable materials for airbeds

Airbeds are made of PVC, a synthetic rubber. The coating makes the airbed more durable and longer lasting. Many models are also equipped with a velour flocking, which not only feels soft and comfortable when lying on it, but also prevents the airbed from slipping.

Generally speaking, the more stress your air bed has to withstand, the stronger the material should be. This applies especially to the top and bottom sides. Rubberized cotton is extremely robust and not very susceptible to sharp objects. If it also has UV protection, you can also use it outdoors – for example for camping. Air beds with bottom and top sides made of PVC are an inexpensive alternative in the living area. The side elements of most air beds are also made of PVC or vinyl, as there are no special forces at work in these places that would require a more robust material.

Tips for using and repairing airbeds

Airbeds require little care and maintenance. Nevertheless, you should take a close look at them from time to time. If you follow these tips, you will enjoy your airbed for a long time:

  • Stick to the maximum load limit specified by the manufacturer, which is usually between 135 and 275 kg. Also avoid one-sided loads.
  • Do not pump up the air bed too much, as it could burst if it is too full. Jumping on the bed should also be taboo.
  • Pets’ claws are often sharp or pointed, so it’s best not to let your pets romp around on airbeds.
  • A damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning. Avoid using caustic cleaning agents and instead use a mild soap.
  • If the air bed gets wet – for example after cleaning or due to damp ground while camping – let it dry completely before storing it away again.
  • To find leaks, pump up the bed in a quiet room and check by listening and feeling for any holes. This works best with a moistened finger, as you can feel drafts better with it.
  • Use the repair kit provided to make repairs. Alternatively, you can also use a tire repair kit from your bike.
  • Before patching, it is a good idea to clean the area with alcohol and roughen the surface with sandpaper . This will help the patch to stick better.
  • You can prevent further holes by not using sharp or hot objects on the air bed .

Conclusion: Suitable airbeds for your needs

Which air bed you choose depends on various factors: the location, the space required and the desired level of comfort. Here is a final overview:

  • Soft airbeds with velour flocking are recommended as guest beds for indoor use . A headboard provides additional comfort when eating breakfast or reading in bed. If you have enough space, go straight for a comfortable double bed.
  • For camping holidays, you need an air bed with a sturdy base made of rubberized cotton. It can also be placed on the grass if there is a small stone hidden there.
  • For seniors, you should pay attention to the height of the bed. Older people can often get up more easily from a bed that is at least 40 cm high.
  • Beds with fall protection on the sides are safe for children . A lower bed is recommended in these cases.
  • If space is limited, a single bed with a lying surface of about 70 to 100 cm wide and a maximum of 200 cm long is advantageous, as it fits well in small rooms.
  • Double beds that are at least 135 cm wide and offer enough space to turn also provide increased sleeping comfort for single people.
