How to buy the washbasins?

by Decor8 Admin 14 Nov 2025

Decorative cabinets with integrated washbasin

You start the day well rested and enter the bathroom. Your bathroom welcomes you in a tidy and well-organized manner. Your toothbrush and toothbrush cup are already within easy reach on your washstand. You only need to open the drawer to get to your make-up or razor. Since everything is in its place, you can quickly finish your morning routine and devote yourself to a delicious breakfast. Here we show you which designs washstands are available in and which model suits which style of living. We also give you tips on installation and maintenance.

Washbasin with base cabinet for your daily washing routine

Razor, shower gel, soap and body lotion – washbasins offer space to place the utensils that you use daily or occasionally in the bathroom on the shelf or to store them in the cupboard underneath. Unlike washbasins, for which you buy a separate base cabinet, here the basin is already integrated into the base cabinet. There are no protruding edges and you don’t need to pay attention to the dimensions of the bathroom base cabinet or the height of the washbasin.

The basin and the cabinet are visually coordinated so that you can choose a washbasin that matches your bathroom furniture and tiles. The washbasins are often made of robust and easy-care ceramic. The washbasins themselves are often made of medium-density fiberboard, or MDF for short, which is resistant to water and available in many colors. Washbasins are available in different formats and sizes that effectively use the available space in narrow bathrooms and fit well in large bathrooms.

Washbasin variants and their uses

The many designs and variants of washbasins are suitable for people of different sizes, different family constellations, as well as different preferences and bathroom sizes. Below you will find out which variants are available and which ones are suitable for your purposes.

Safety and appearance: the materials of washbasins

Most washbasins are made of ceramic. The smooth and durable material is easy to clean and therefore hygienic. The shelf is often made of safety glass or MDF boards, which are made from wood and glue. Both glass and MDF boards are easy to clean and resistant to moisture. With a wood decor, the MDF board can have a warm appearance, and colorful it is a cheerful splash of color.

The washbasins themselves are also usually made of MDF boards. Their advantage is that they can be colour-matched. Glass panels made of safety glass, which serve as the surface for the washbasin in some models, are resistant to aggressive liquids such as perfume and nail polish remover.

Standing and floating washbasins

You can choose between washbasins that stand on feet on the floor and those that are attached to the wall. The latter are also known as floating washbasins and have an airy appearance. The advantage of floating washbasins is that you can determine the mounting height yourself . This is particularly good for wheelchair users or if a significantly taller or shorter person lives in the house. The advantage of standing washbasins is above all that they are easy to install.

Storage space in drawers and cabinet doors

Vanity units with drawers are practical for small, narrow bathrooms because drawers take up less space when opened than cabinet doors. Jewellery, cosmetics and small care products such as cotton pads and eye cream can be stored in them. When opened, the light falls evenly on the contents and even items in the furthest corner are within easy reach.

Cabinet doors are a good choice if you want to store a lot of tall toiletries like hairspray cans or your towels stacked up inside and have them within easy reach. Vanities that offer cabinet doors and drawers combine the advantages of each.

Types of washbasins: recessed or surface-mounted

The washbasins are usually included in the delivery of the vanity units. The vanity unit determines how the washbasin and table are connected to one another: if the washbasin is recessed, the edges are at the same height as the vanity unit shelf. With countertop washbasins, the washbasin rests on the vanity unit. With these models, you should also consider how many centimeters higher the basin is than the table when assembling.

This washbasin matches your interior style

The washbasin should fit harmoniously into your bathroom furnishings and your living style. Here we show you which washbasin models suit which bathroom.

Washbasins for large and bright bathrooms

In a large, bright bathroom, the washbasin can become a central element. Cabinets with wide drawers or door elements fill the space. Dark wood and black high-gloss fronts look classy on light tiles. A large bathroom mirror across the entire width of the washbasin visually highlights the washbasin with base cabinet.

Washbasins for small bathrooms

For small bathrooms, a washbasin that does not extend too far into the room is suitable. When you stand in front of it, you should have at least 100 cm of space. A white washbasin or a model made of light wood makes the room appear open and friendly. If your bathroom seems dark due to its small size, additional bathroom lights can brighten up the room.

Tips for the family bathroom

For families, there are washbasins with double sinks to ease the morning rush. Children often cope better with a recessed sink because they can rest their forearms on the washbasin. To avoid injuries, washbasins should not have any protruding edges. Younger siblings can use a step stool to reach the tap and the sink until they are big enough.

Tips for installing and maintaining your washbasin

So that you can use your washbasin well and enjoy it for a long time, we give you a few tips on how to properly install and clean your washbasin with base cabinet:

  • You will need a universal wrench for valve nipples, sealing paste and a faucet pliers to connect the sink – or you can hire a professional.
  • Before dismantling an old sink, you should  remove the siphon. The siphon is a part of the drain pipe that serves as an odor trap and also ensures that no negative pressure builds up in the water pipe. Turn off the main water tap after removing it.
  • Have a new siphon ready, as well as a drain valve and silicone. After attaching the sink, grout the washbasin with the silicone.
  • Place the vanity unit where the connections for the sink are located. The water connections should be in the middle of the vanity unit  so that you can easily install the sink and base cabinet.
  • A suitable height for washbasins is about halfway between your height. Measure the shortest and tallest person in the household and calculate the ideal height of the washbasin for both: height / 2 = height of the washbasin. Once you have determined the lowest and highest heights, look for a compromise in the middle.
  • Usually, wash basin fittings are not included. Therefore, you should find out which fitting fits your wash basin before buying .
  • You should wipe the sink, faucet and countertop dry daily to avoid stubborn limescale stains and mold.

Conclusion: Practical washbasins for stylish bathrooms

A vanity unit combines a washbasin and a base cabinet to create a harmonious overall picture, offers additional storage options and fits well into your bathroom.

  • In smaller bathrooms, light washbasins with a shallow depth are suitable.
  • In large and bright bathrooms, a washbasin with wide drawers or door elements looks particularly pretty. A wide mirror visually highlights the washbasin with base cabinet.
  • In households with residents of different sizes, floating washbasins are suitable; you can attach them to the wall at the height you want.
  • Family households make their morning routine easier with double sinks.
