How to buy floor lamps?

by Decor8 Admin 27 Dec 2025

Flexible light sources with individual application possibilities

It’s raining outside and it’s already getting dark as you make yourself comfortable on the couch. The tea is still brewing for a few minutes on the coffee table in front of you and the new issue of your favorite magazine is already ready. With your new floor lamp you can create the right atmosphere for a feel-good evening. Its fabric shade gives off a subtle and soft light that makes the room cozy. Read more about floor lamps and how you can use them cleverly in your living space.

Put in the right light: This is what distinguishes floor lamps

A lampshade, a base – and the floor lamp is ready. The advantage of these beautiful light sources is that they can be placed very quickly wherever you need a little more light. With lampshades, the lamps provide atmospheric light, but can also illuminate entire rooms as ceiling floodlights. With dimmable spotlights, you can regulate the light continuously and adapt it to your needs, your current mood and the respective lighting situation.

Thanks to their variety, you can use floor lamps in a variety of ways and integrate them into puristic, modern rooms as well as rooms full of elegance or with a romantic flair.

Beautiful lamp, beautiful light: Overview of popular variants

With floor lamps, you can quickly and easily illuminate selected areas or entire rooms. We have put together an overview for you of how you can cleverly use the individual variants.

Arc lamps: These lamps have got the hang of it

The lamps with the characteristic arch are usually kept simple and consist of a slim metal frame, a fabric-covered lampshade or a hemisphere made of frosted glass or plastic. A heavy base ensures that the lamp stands securely due to its high weight. Due to the generous arch, the light cone is not in line with the base, but extends beyond it.

You can therefore place the elegant arc lamps in the living room next to the sofa and use the light diffusion to create a pleasant, centrally aligned light source. Because you can adjust the height and inclination of the lamps , they blend in well with the surroundings and are also very space-saving.

Ceiling floodlights: indirect and generous light

With a ceiling floodlight, the light cone points upwards, i.e. directly at the ceiling. The light is reflected there and shines back towards the floor. This gently illuminates the room, while dimmable halogen spotlights provide adjustable light. Most models also have a small reading lamp halfway up that you can switch on independently of the main light. With a movable gooseneck, you can direct the light beam precisely at your book or magazine. If, for example, you want to make yourself comfortable in the wing chair in the reading corner, you can just switch on the reading lamp for cozy, pleasant reading light.

Floor lamps: decorative designs

Floor lamps are available in many different designs. The lamps are decorative and bathe the room in pleasant and subtle light. Cylindrical or funnel-shaped fabric shades, slim and oriental-looking paper lamps or even illuminated branches set atmospheric accents. A floor lamp with a fabric shade also welcomes you in the entrance area with a pleasant glow of light and is an alternative to the sometimes dazzling ceiling light. A floor lamp can also beautifully show off your hallway furniture.

Which bulb produces which light? Overview of light sources

Without the right light source, your floor lamp will remain purely a decorative object. Below you will find an overview of the different variants.

Light bulbs and wattage

The higher the wattage (W), the brighter and stronger the light bulb will shine. If you want to bathe a corner in subtle light, 40-watt bulbs are often sufficient. If, however, you want your lamp to illuminate an entire room, choose a version with a correspondingly higher wattage. Nowadays, incandescent bulbs are increasingly being replaced by energy-saving bulbs and the brightness is no longer given in watts, but in lumens (lm). A standard 40-watt light bulb corresponds to an output of 470 lumens for an LED lamp, while classic 60-watt light bulbs are comparable to an LED output of around 800 lumens.

Economical and durable: LED

With a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours, the energy-efficient LED lamp is superior to all other light sources in terms of durability. The light source also does not get warm, so your rooms stay cool even when the light is on and no energy is lost in the form of heat. LEDs have another advantage over energy-saving lamps: their luminosity reaches 100% immediately after switching on.

halogen

The natural and almost daylight-like lighting makes the universally applicable halogen bulbs so popular. The light source provides light for up to 3,000 hours; just like with a light bulb, the tungsten filament is heated by electricity and thus illuminated. The bulbs emit a warm and pleasant light with their infrared heat radiation, which is also often referred to as warm white.

Light color

The color of light is the color produced by a self-luminous light source. Warm white light with a color temperature of less than 3,300 Kelvin (K) produces a yellow-white light that most people find cozy and pleasant. Neutral white light with up to 5,300 Kelvin appears rather cool and is often perceived as artificial light. Daylight white light, on the other hand, has a color temperature of over 5,300 Kelvin . The light therefore looks very natural and can have an invigorating and stimulating effect.

The right light for the office or at home

With the right selection of light sources, you can significantly influence the atmosphere of a room. In the study, you benefit from bright and cool light that promotes your productivity, while in the living room it can be dimmer and more cozy. Here you can find out which light sources are suitable in which situation.

Floor lamps with daylight in the study

A mix of daylight, direct and indirect lighting and a task light are a sensible combination to make your work environment effective. The human biorhythm is based on the time of day and brightness – with transparent curtains you let in enough daylight so that you only need to switch on additional light sources when required.

In addition to ceiling lighting, swiveling daylight lamps with adjustable light colors or floor lamps with daylight bulbs create pleasant workplace lighting. Energy-saving lamps that provide sufficient lighting for the desk without dazzling are recommended in the work area .

Dimmable spotlights in the living room

The living room can be a little more atmospheric, but you should still make sure that the lighting is bright enough. Wallpaper, curtains, upholstery and carpets absorb a lot of light. Dimmable bulbs are therefore an advantage, as they can be adjusted to different brightness levels . For a homely atmosphere with isolated points of light, use weaker bulbs. In this case, the ceiling light should also be able to illuminate the room on its own. In the living room, bulbs such as incandescent light bulbs or equivalent LED lamps are nice, as they create a soft cone of light and emit a warm light.

Islands of light in the bedroom

The bedroom is where you relax and unwind. But it is also where you choose your clothes and read a book in bed in the evening. The room should therefore have sufficient ceiling lighting and decorative mood lighting . Floor lamps made of white paper with bright bulbs can brightly light small bedrooms. Placed in the corner next to a comfortable armchair, an arc lamp can set atmospheric accents.

Light with style: These floor lamps match your interior

Floor lamps not only provide beautiful lighting, you can also use them as decorative elements. Here are a few tips on which floor lamps fit well into your interior design style.

Romantic lamps for the country house style

Warm colors and furniture made of natural wood predominate in the country house style. When it comes to lighting, you should therefore opt for subtle and indirect lighting. Dimmable ceiling floodlights with an ornate metal base are a good choice for basic lighting in the living room. In hallways and bedrooms, floor lamps with a dark lampshade provide indirect lighting accents.

Exceptional floor lamps for the vintage style

In the vintage style, you appreciate furnishings that look old and show signs of wear. Floor lamps with a spotlight look are therefore suitable for your vintage furniture. The material should resemble chrome or steel, and definitely be metallic. Use floor lamps in this style of living primarily to put individual, particularly beautiful pieces of furniture in the spotlight. You can also use floor lamps to illuminate paintings in the vintage style.

Bright, simple lamp models for the modern living style

Modern furniture is kept simple and the rooms are decorated in a rather discreet manner. The rule is: less is more. You should also follow this principle when choosing your floor lamps. Choose models with a lot of white that are rather slim and unobtrusive . Lamp bases should be made of metal or stainless steel. Finely curved arc lamps work just as well as straight floor lamps where the light source is dimmed by a white lampshade, for example.

Modern living spaces are usually quite bright. That’s why a dimmable ceiling floodlight is often sufficient as basic lighting. You can use smaller table lamps, for example in a spherical shape, as a decorative lighting addition.

Conclusion: Flexible floor lamps as decorative light sources

A floor lamp can be placed anywhere you want to highlight areas with additional lighting. Read the following summary to find out which lamps are suitable for which use.

  • Lamps with dimmers are good for your living room . This allows you to adjust the light intensity to suit your mood. Warm white LED light is particularly homely and energy-saving. With ceiling spotlights, you can provide good basic lighting in the living room or create indirect light.
  • Atmospheric floor lamps with paper shades are ideal for the bedroom . They provide enough light without glaring when you are choosing your outfit for the day at the wardrobe.
  • For the study, you need lamps that illuminate your work area well. Ceiling spotlights with an additional reading lamp are ideal here. Swiveling daylight lamps give you good visibility and can lift your mood.
